1. What should I look for when buying a SAD lamp?

Don't just look for the words “10,000 lux.” Ask the more important question: 10,000 lux at what distance?

A proper SAD lamp (light box) needs to deliver adequate light where you're actually sitting, not merely produce 10,000 lux a few inches from the screen. The size of the illuminated area, the recommended distance, UV filtering, positioning, and daily exposure time all matter.

Yale researchers warn that many light devices advertised online as 10,000 lux are too small or dim to match the equipment used in SAD research.

Bottom line: Don't buy the number on the box. Find out what that number means under actual conditions of use.

2. Are all 10,000-lux SAD lamps the same?

Absolutely not.

Lux is the measure of light reaching a particular area. A device might produce 10,000 lux at six inches while another delivers it from nearly two feet away.

That's a huge difference when you're expected to use the device every morning.

Yale studies specifically warn consumers that many products advertise “10,000 lux” without stating the distance at which the measurement is taken. Their testing also found major differences among commercially available devices.

Whenever you see “10,000 lux,” your next question should be: At what distance?

3. What is the best alternative to a SAD lamp?

That depends on why you're considering one.

Traditional bright-light boxes are well established for treating winter-pattern Seasonal Affective Disorder. The NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) describes a standard approach involving a 10,000-lux light box for approximately 30–45 minutes, generally first thing in the morning.

4. Does the size of a SAD lamp matter?

Yes - and this is something shoppers often overlook.

A larger illuminated surface generally gives you more room to position yourself while maintaining useful light exposure. With a very small, bright light device (such as a lamp or tablet), you may need to sit considerably closer and maintain your position more carefully.

Yale studies found that many small SAD light boxes advertised online did not meet its specifications. Researchers specifically note that smaller devices can require users to sit closer and allow less side-to-side movement.

That little lamp that looks great on your nightstand might therefore be very different from the large light boxes used in clinical research.

5. Are cheap SAD lamps effective?

Price alone doesn't tell you whether a SAD lamp is effective. Neither does “10,000 lux” printed on the listing.

What matters is whether the device delivers the required light intensity at a practical distance, over a useful illuminated area, while appropriately limiting UV exposure.

Yale's testing found substantial differences among commercially available devices, including small units advertised as 10,000 lux that only achieved that intensity at impractically close distances. Sitting with your face 7 inches from a bright light for an extended period isn't particularly practical or comfortable.

So instead of asking:

“Is this cheap SAD lamp any good?”

ask:

“How much light actually reaches me where I'm going to sit?”

That's a much better buying question.

6. How much should a good SAD lamp cost?

Don't use price as your primary quality test.

An expensive lamp isn't automatically effective, and a cheap lamp isn't automatically a bargain.

Look for documented output at a specified distance, adequate illuminated area, appropriate UV filtering, and clear instructions explaining how the device must be positioned and used.

Mayo Clinic recommends considering intensity, UV exposure, design, and whether the device was specifically made for seasonal affective disorder (SAD) when choosing a light box.

In other words:

Shop the specifications first. Shop the price second.

7. Can a small SAD lamp really produce 10,000 lux?

Yes - but here's the catch: From how far away?

A small device can technically produce 10,000 lux when measured very close to the light source. That doesn't mean you'll receive 10,000 lux sitting at a comfortable distance.

Yale tested small light boxes and found that examples advertised at 10,000 lux achieved that level only at approximately 7 inches. Their researchers considered that unrealistic for normal use.

So when a tiny device advertises 10,000 lux, don't stop reading.

Find the distance.

That's where the useful information begins.

8. What does “10,000 lux” actually mean on a SAD lamp?

Lux describes illuminance - the amount of light reaching a surface.

So “10,000 lux” doesn't tell the whole story unless you also know where the measurement was taken.

Move farther from a light source and the amount of light reaching you decreases. That's why legitimate SAD light box instructions specify the distance at which the user should sit.

Yale’s study argues that reputable manufacturers should clearly state the distance at which their device produces 10,000 lux.

Think of it this way: “10,000 lux” without a distance is like advertising a car's fuel economy without telling you whether the measurement was city or highway.

You're missing an important part of the number.

9. Are portable SAD lamps as effective as larger SAD light boxes?

Not necessarily. Portable and effective are two different things.

Smaller light sources can be easier to carry, but their size may require you to sit closer and maintain a more precise position to receive the intended exposure.

Yale found that many small light panels marketed as 10,000-lux devices did not produce that intensity at a usable distance.

A portable SAD lamp can certainly be useful if its specifications support the intended use. But don't assume: Smaller + 10,000 lux = same experience as a research-grade full-size SAD light box.

Check the distance and illuminated area.

10. Can a phone or tablet app replace a SAD lamp?

No  - not simply by making your screen bright or displaying a “light therapy” screen.

A phone or tablet display is not automatically equivalent to a properly designed 10,000-lux SAD light box used according to an established bright-light protocol.

Interestingly, though, your phone can be useful for checking a lamp. Yale studies report that lux-meter apps that use a phone's front-facing camera can provide reasonably accurate measurements and recommend them as one way for consumers to check the light intensity they're actually receiving.

So your phone may be useful for testing your SAD lamp.

It should not be considered your SAD lamp.
