11. How close do you need to sit to a 10,000-lux SAD lamp?

It depends entirely on the lamp.

A SAD lamp doesn't deliver 10,000 lux at every distance. To receive the advertised intensity, you need to position yourself at the distance specified by the manufacturer.

According to Yale's Winter Depression Research Clinic, the proper distance for SAD light boxes is typically 11 to 30 inches. Some smaller devices, however, only achieve their advertised 10,000 lux at extremely close distances. Yale cites one commercial unit that produces 10,000 lux at just 6 inches.

That's a major difference in how a lamp fits into a real morning routine.

12. How long should you use a SAD lamp every morning?

For traditional light therapy, 30-45 minutes is a common recommended range, depending on the device and protocol.

Yale describes a typical protocol of 10,000 lux for 30 minutes early in the morning. NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) describes approximately 30-45 minutes every day, generally first thing in the morning during the darker months.

Lower light intensity can mean considerably longer exposure. Yale explains the commonly used relationship as roughly:

5,000 lux -> 60 minutes

2,500 lux -> 120 minutes

So before buying a lamp, don't ask only how bright it is.

Ask how much of your morning it wants.

15. Do you have to look directly at a SAD lamp?

No. And you generally shouldn't stare directly into one.

16. Can you move around while using a SAD lamp?

Within limits.

20. Why are some SAD lamps so much larger than others?

So the giant light box isn't necessarily large because nobody thought about making it smaller.
